Campus Safety
Student safety is a key priority, and we understand the importance of creating a secure environment for everyone. In response to student feedback, the university has been working on several improvements to enhance security across the High Wycombe campus. Over the next six months, several changes will be implemented at BNU, focusing on better lighting, upgraded CCTV, and a strengthened security service. Below is a breakdown of the key actions being taken to improve safety and ensure students feel more secure while on campus.
External Lighting Upgrades
- LED lighting installation in the Gateway as part of an improvement project.
- Additional external lighting enhancements, including upgrades to the main concourse.
- Further lighting improvements are planned as car parks are adjusted over the summer.
CCTV and Security Enhancements
- Improved positioning of cameras for better coverage.
- Upgraded CCTV control room layout for enhanced monitoring.
- Major security improvements coming later this year with increased training and investment in safety.
New Security Leadership
- Recruitment has begun for a BNU Security and Risk Manager, a new role aimed at strengthening security oversight.
- The new manager will review current safety measures, identify areas for improvement, and consult with the Students’ Union to enhance security further by listening to student feedback.
The Brunel Shed
When The Brunel Shed was first purchased, some student feedback raised concerns about its financial impact, questioning the decision when other areas also needed investment. At the time, the full costs were not transparent, but as the project has progressed, we can now move forward with what is possible.
We met with Director of Estates, Paul Robinson, to have a look around, and what stood out from our conversation is that the university is committed to ensuring this space benefits students, providing an additional option for societies, events, and activities when needed. While it may not be a permanent student venue, it is intended to be a valuable resource that enhances student life and creates new opportunities for engagement. As we move closer to completion, we’ll be looking at ways to ensure it benefits the student experience. Stay tuned for more updates on how the Brunel Shed could become a flexible and valuable resource for students.

Digital Campus
Students have shared valuable feedback regarding technology, particularly the MyBNU app and how it can better support their university experience. A key request has been greater accessibility to essential services, including financial information, the ability to make payments, access invoices, and even integrate their student ID.
We’ve been discussing how the app can be improved to meet these needs. While transitioning to a fully digital institution takes time, we must explore step-by-step enhancements to make meaningful improvements. We will continue to work with the university to ensure that technology evolves in a way that enhances student access and convenience. We know this is something that is a part of their Digital strategic plan.
