Overview

All members of the University are invited to attend Professor Sabuj Mallik’s Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday 13th November 2024 4.30pm – 5.30pm in the Gateway Lecture Theatre. If you would like to attend, please register attendance on this link here.

In this lecture Sabuj will delve into the impact that transitioning from lead based to lead-free solders exhibits on the reliability of electronic products. Through illustrative examples Sabuj will offer valuable insights into how his research has aided electronic manufacturing industries in overcoming the hurdles associated with adopting new solder materials. The presentation will explore several research studies which have investigated the reliability of electronics packaging, with particular emphasis on lead-free solder joints. The lecture will also demonstrate how a multitude of experimental and simulation-based research endeavours have contributed to comprehending,

characterising, and predicting solder joint behaviours under demanding operational circumstances.

Sabuj embarked on his journey into the field of electronics materials and manufacturing during his doctoral studies under the guidance of Prof. Ndy Ekere within the Electronics Manufacturing Research Group (EMERG) at the University of Greenwich. Through his innovative research, Sabuj developed novel solder paste characterisation techniques that proved invaluable to solder paste manufacturers in validating their products effectively. These test methods played a crucial role in predicting the processing performance and quality of emerging paste formulations, thereby accelerating the introduction of new products to the market. Sabuj later assumed leadership of the EMERG team at Greenwich, where he played a pivotal role in advancing pioneering research endeavours focused on the thermos-mechanical reliability of solder joints.

Professor Sabuj Mallik is the Head of School for the School of Engineering and the Built Environment at Buckinghamshire New University (BNU). He is a Chartered Engineer (Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IMechE) and a Chartered Manager (Chartered Management Institute) and has served in various IMechE local area committees, including as Chairman (in 2021 and 2022) of the IMechE Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Area Committee. Sabuj also volunteered as STEM ambassador since 2012, focusing on raising awareness of STEM careers and qualifications among young people through school visits, college engagements and career events.

There will be time for questions and the lecture will be followed by a reception at the Mezzanine Beeches.
