Ever showed up for a date where they're not who their profile said they were? Maybe you're out with friends and something just doesn't feel right, or you feel unsafe?
Unfortunately these things happen, but we want you to know that we're here for you when you need. That’s why we’re proud to be supporting ‘Ask for Angela’, a campaign to provide a vital lifeline for anyone who finds themselves in a difficult situation they can’t get out of.
This year, with pubs and bars closed, we understand that that lifeline is no longer easily accessible for students. That's why we've extended our 'Ask for Angela' intiative across all our services - including our coffee shops and receptions.
What is Ask for Angela?
'Ask for Angela' is an intiative run across pubs, clubs and bars where you can ask for Angela if you're feeling unsafe and we'll help you out of that situation. If you're feeling unsafe in any of our services, like The Venue, The Lounge or even the coffee shops, head to the bar or counter and ask for Angela. You can also come to our Students' Union reception on either campus and we'll be able to help. Our staff have all been trained, so don't be afraid to talk to us. We believe you, and you are not alone.
What happens after I have asked for Angela?
Depending on the circumstances, the member of staff will show you to somewhere safe and may call a senior member of staff or manager to come and help. They may ask you a few questions in order to put the right support in place for you and if needed, are also able to contact Security on your behalf.
Where can I find information on Ask for Angela?
We have posters in all of our toilet cubicles and you'll spot a poster behind each of our bars, tills and reception desk.
Can anyone use Ask for Angela?
Yes, 'Ask for Angela' can be used by anyone who feels uncomfortable or unsafe in any of our services. It doesn't matter if you're just looking for a safe way out, on a date that isn't who they said they were, or if you feel that the situation is odd. Anyone can ask a member of staff for Angela and we'll help you safely and discreetly.
Can I use Ask for Angela outside of campus?
'Ask for Angela' is a nationwide safety campaign, however not all institutions may implement it. In venues that do run the 'Ask for Angela' initiative, there should be signs or stickers visible to you.
